Chapter V: Tanzania
Four years ago, BUBR Africa began with a question: what would it mean to ride this continent on our own terms?
Ghana answered first. Then Rwanda. Then South Africa. Then Senegal.
Now, Tanzania.
There's a particular kind of quiet here — in the long light over the Rift Valley, in the climb from the coast toward Kilimanjaro's shadow, on roads that have carried traders and travellers for generations before us. This is a country that understands the land as something to be moved through with patience, not conquered.
We come to Tanzania the way we've come to every place before it. Slowly. With open eyes. Riding not to pass through, but to arrive — in the landscape, in the communities, in something larger than the kilometres.
Five chapters in, the question hasn't changed. Only the place we're asking it.
TANZANIA COUNTDOWN
The Long Way to the Coast
The ride starts in Dar es Salaam — a city that never quite slows down — and ends in Bagamoyo, a name that means "lay down your heart."
In between is the part most people never see. The bridges and business districts fade into neighbourhoods, then game reserve, then coast. This is the route Tanzania doesn't put on a postcard, because postcards can't hold a journey this long.
There's something fitting about a ride like this ending somewhere with a name like that. By the time you reach Bagamoyo, you'll have earned the rest — legs tired, mind clear, nothing left to carry but what got you there.
The real story is everything on the way — the university built to educate a nation, the neighbourhoods where daily life plays out in full view, the ruins that have watched the coast change for centuries. And then the arrival, the way it's meant to feel: like setting something down.
Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo. One country, several lives, all of them on the way to the ocean.
