BUBR Africa 2026: Participant Expectations

_DSC00177

Location: Senegal

Event Dates: 1–10th May 2026

Purpose: Raising funds and awareness for Banouna through an unforgettable cycling journey across the vibrant and challenging landscapes of Senegal.

This blog aims to ensure every participant is clear on what they are signing up for and is sincerely aligned with the philosophy and culture of BUBR Africa.

BUBR Africa is:

  • A charitable social impact project that to date has fundraised close to £40,000 for grassroots initiatives across Africa that use cycling as a force for good.

  • An activation curated by a small team of volunteers and freelancers, providing members of the African diaspora a unique opportunity to connect with the continent in an authentic and culturally rich manner.

  • A challenging collaborative experience where team ethic is paramount to ensure every member on the trip feels empowered.

BUBR Africa is not:

  • A speed cycling training camp set in a tropical climate.

  • A high-end luxury tourism experience.

  • A colonial expedition.

Fundraising Requirements

A group fundraising target is set, and every participant is expected to use their network to achieve a minimum individual target of £200–£300 (dependent on total number of cyclists). Our expectation is to have achieved the group fundraising target before arriving in Senegal for the activation.

Why Training Matters

The tour includes six days of riding through diverse terrains — from coastal paths to inland trails. While we are committed to making this an inclusive and supportive experience, the physical demands of the route require that every rider train and be well-prepared.

Training is crucial because it:

  • Ensures personal safety and reduces risk of injuries

  • Contributes to the smooth running of group logistics – particularly regarding timings

  • Maintains team morale and camaraderie

  • Supports the achievement of a collective charitable impact

Tour Group Structure

To support a range of abilities while maintaining safety and cohesion, riders will be split into three main groups:

Group A: Advanced – (16mph average+)

Group B: Intermediate – (14–16mph average)

Group C: Supportive Ride – (12–13mph average)

To reflect our inclusive, team-first approach, we encourage all members of Groups A and B to ride at least one of the six cycling days as part of Group C.

We encourage honest self-assessment and will support you in identifying the most suitable pace group for your ability.

Strava & Training Submissions

Every participant will be expected to:

  • Have and share a Strava account at registration

  • Provide data demonstrating ability/experience to take part in an activation of this nature

  • Submit monthly Strava activity for the final four months leading up to the ride (12 weeks)

Monthly Training Rides

Following sign-up, we will aim to host one training ride per month in London to support preparation and build camaraderie.
